Interview with Ken Segall on jcp, Apple and Ron Johnson

I had a great conversation with Ken Segall, former Apple and NeXT Creative Director (and the guy who coined the term "iMac"), about Apple's former VP of Retail Ron Johnson and the challenges he faces as the CEO of JC Penny. You can read Ken's article, "Meanwhile, over at Ron Johnson’s place…" here.

Click here to listen to the interview with Ken Segall on jcp, Apple and Ron Johnson.

It's also posted to the iTunes Store under the Your Mac Life Podcast section so it's probably just easier if you went ahead and subscribed to Your Mac Life on iTunes.

As always, we hope you enjoy it and let us know what you think!

A way to connect to IRC for people….

Hey Shawn,

I know it's close to show time, and may be a little too late... But this thought just occurred to me. Since the web IRC chat as been turned off, that may leave some people without the ability to chat. I thought I'd provide at least one solution.. the one I use, in case you want to share the info somehow.

I use a program called Adium:

http://www.adium.im/

Download Adium and install it on your Mac. It's completely free, open source software. It doesn't have any Java in it. Once it's installed, launch it. Go to 'Adium' 'Preferences' 'Accounts'. Click the Plus sign in the lower left corner, to add an account. Pick account type IRC.

1) In the 'Nickname' field, put the name you normally use for chatting with the YML group...
2) In the 'Hostname' field, put "irc.chat-solutions.org"
3) In the 'Password' field, put the password to your Nickname, if you've previously set one. If you haven't set one, leave this field blank.

The rest of the tabs (Personal, Options, Privacy, Proxy); you can leave blank. Click the OK button. Click the check box next to this account in the accounts list. The circle to the far right side should turn green and the account should say "Online" if you have successfully connected to the IRC server.

You will get a pop-up window with two tabs. One from 'global' and one from 'nickserv'. The one from 'global' is just the IRC server's information messages. You can just close that tab. Mouse over the little orange circle, and it will turn into an 'x' to close. In the 'nickserv' tab, type "/join #yourmaclife" (without the quotes).

A new tab will appear, that will be our chat room. Click on that tab, and you're ready to chat. You can either close the 'nickserv' tab, or leave it open. Doesn't matter. I know there are other ways to connect. Bill uses a different program. But this is how I do it, and it doesn't cost the user any money. It's relatively simple....

Use this info as you wish....

-Monte

Considering the big news today with Blackberry’s release of their Blackberry Z10 and Q10 smartphones, as well as changing their corporate name officially from RIM to Blackberry, it seems rather fitting that we poke a little fun with a some "The One Ronnie" British humour.

A YML On-the-Fly Review of the Libratone.com Zipp Speaker

On YML just before Christmas, Shawn surprised Bill and Ian with an "On-the-Fly Review" of the very cool Libratone Zipp Speaker. The boys had fun playing with the speaker live on the air. This is the edited video of that review. We hope you enjoy it and, as always, please let us know what you think.

Apple’s Next Battleground isn’t TV; it’s Web Services

Apple does hardware and software well, and it’s at the top of its game when it does them together. But when it comes to Web services, the company is a laggard, with an ever-lengthening conga line of missteps.

There are hands-down fiascos: MobileMe, Ping and Maps. And there are works in progress: Game Center, iTunes Match and iCloud. And all of them speak to a troubling deficiency that Apple just can’t seem to overcome. One that’s garnering increasingly more public scrutiny. One that, at its worst — say with the disastrous Maps debacle — shows up the company that prides itself on building the “magical and revolutionary” as fallible.

So, as the 2013 Apple rumor mill ramps up, and the prognosticators wonder whether the company’s product pipeline includes a television, a watch, or both, consider this: While Apple could likely use another disruptive innovation on which to build its continued success, what it really needs — crucially — is to do Web services well.

The new year starts out with, what else, something a little strange.
Scotch Tape: A Photo-series Of Taped Faces

“This is a photoseries called Scotch Tape by photographer Wes Naman. With the help of his assistant Joy Godfrey, the models’ faces are manipulated using Scotch tape. There’s a lot of squished noses and lips, stretched eyebrows, and smashed faces. The final product is pretty funny in a disturbing “Sweet Jesus burn it with fire!” sort of way, you know? Of course you know. You’ve already scrolled through all the pics and have proceeded to wash your eyeballs out with bleach. But that’s not gonna help. Oh no, those images are burned into your retinas. FOR ETERNITY. I… probably should have warned you about that.”

Toldja it was a little strange. ;-)

The remarkably thin skinned Cult of Mac

Everyone who follows me on Twitter or listens to YML or who has met me in person knows what I think of the web site, Cult of Mac. Poorly designed, cluttered, bad, writing, awful copy editing, etc., etc., etc.

So it will not come as a shock to anyone that they may not be my biggest fan, either. I'm OK with that. But, when they start doing really stupid stuff is when it gets fun.

Yesterday, one of the mouth breathers at CoM posted a story about the single stupidest thing I've seen come out of CES so far - a Bluetooth enabled FORK. Yeah, it's as stupid as you imagine it to be.

So I commented on the post:

Today, I go back to the site to see if there are additional comments to be made and see this:

Poof...my post is gone. I tried to log in to see if that was the problem and got the "Permission Denied" message.

Now, don't get me wrong. It's their web site. they can do as they please. They can ban anyone as they see fit.

But banning someone just because they've said mean things about you on Twitter seems the height of childishness and petulance. But that's what I've come to expect from Cult of Mac - a web site full of bad writers who can't take criticism.
