Apple Cans AppleWorks

From Macworld UK
AppleWorks' last breath was masked by last week's iMac, iLife and iWork announcements - Apple has discontinued the product.

Apple told resellers of the demise of AppleWorks last week, announcing that the software had reached "End of Life" status. It will no longer be sold. The AppleWorks website now directs users to the iWork section of Apple's website. The original AppleWorks was written by Robert Lissner and released in 1984 by Apple for the Apple II family of computers, and at one point was the biggest-selling software package in the industry. The modern incarnation of AppleWorks started life as ClarisWorks, written by Bob Hearn and Scott Holdaway.

At one time, AppleWorks was bundled with all consumer level Macs sold by Apple. It reached version 6.0, where it languished since the late nineties.

Farewell AppleWorks

AppleWorks was great for its time. I'm surprised that Apple kept it around as long as they did after they stopped shipping it with new Macs. I've been an iWork user since the beginning but I think now we finally have a worthy replacement for AppleWorks. I hope that sales of iWork '08 will be so great that Apple will start bundling it to take AppleWorks' place. It seems like it would be a great selling point for switchers since most PCs include some type of office software. It's just an extra step to go grab a copy off the shelf at an Apple Store or other Apple authorized retailer, and many potential new Apple customers may not be aware of iWork or why they might want it.

Strangely it appears that you still can purchase AppleWorks through the online Apple Store:

iWork still needs drawing,

iWork still needs drawing, painting and database modules to truly replace AppleWorks. True there are better tools but not at a popular price and not as integrated as with AW.
