"iTunes Pass is a great way for artists to give exclusive music and video, on their own schedule, directly to their fans," added Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of Internet Services.
Electro pioneers Depeche Mode are set to release their 12th album, Sounds of the Universe, on April 21. In addition to offering a pre-release purchase via iTunes starting today, the band is also offering the first "iTunes Pass," giving fans access to exclusive content both before and after the official release of the album as it becomes available.
The iTunes Pass for Sounds of the Universe costs $18.99—nearly double the $9.99 price of the album proper. Starting today, though, iTunes Pass buyers get not just the first single, "Wrong," but also an exclusive Black Light Odyssey Dub Remix of "Oh Well." The pass is good until June 16, and the band plans to release additional content to fans for the next 15 weeks, including videos, remixes, and more.
As soon as Depeche Mode uploads a new song or video for pass holders, the content will be automatically downloaded to iTunes. Think of it as sort of a Season Pass for TV episodes, only for a particular band or album. Apple will also e-mail pass holders to let them know when new content is available to them, and when the pass is close to expiring, just to make sure they don't miss any of the exclusive content.
