I heard part of last night's show on my way home tonight (lucky Audible subscriber that I am), and just wanted to comment quickly on the whole Beatles thing.
I've been a fan of the Fab forever, as they were still a group when I was a boy, and "Yellow Submarine" was the first movie I ever saw in theatres (my older sister tells me I was afraid of the huge "Glove" in that movie). It was Thirty years ago Next year that I became a full fledge fan, collecting every album, and it was Twenty Years ago (today) that I collected the CD's as they became
available.
For those who don't recall, the Beatles on CD were a big thing back in 1987, and they released them bit by bit, until we got the whole set over the course of a year. It was the impetus for buying my first CD player. So does it still matter in the digital age? Yes!
I think a whole new generation will enjoy discovering the band in a whole new way. The mates themselves have said they are going over each song to make sure they sound great digitally, so it should be an entirely exciting experience.
We'll have to wait 'till the announcement next week to see for certain, but heck, yeah, I'd be interested in a "Beatles" iPod, though I can't, er "imagine" what that would even be? Their names etched into the back is all I can think of. And I dunno where you all got this "Yellow Submarine" thing from. This is the 40th Anniversary of Sgt Pepper -- the Summer of Love. I'd think they'd be better known for that.
Anyway, until I see what we have for sure, while I would certainly be interested in the iPod (if it's features are considerably different from the two year old video one I have now), I can't say I would be interested in rebuying the entire Beatles catalogue. As of now, I have every (official) cd - as I bought them over the course of 1987-88. I'd be very interested in any extras or new things they may come up with (more archives, videos, etc...). But no, not in buying the songs all over again. At least not right now.
But I do believe "the beat goes on" is related to "Something" to do with them.
By the way, I've been driving everybody at work crazy by insisting there is a hidden Beatles reference in the invite photo. Unlikely, or not, I spotted it and then someone on some site (I think it was Macworld) brought credence to it -- the albums seem to be organized to 'loosely' spell out "the Beatles".
It's like looking at clouds, but the guy in the middle is definitely a "T" and the BEA is clearly before him. And for all intents and purposes, the word "the" is seen on the very first album. Now the LES - that's where it's just the clouds in my eyes.)
Looking forward to the 5th!
Tony G.
