iPhone in Canada - Rogers Announces Data/Phone Rate Plan

Well, I kinda figured that Rogers wouldn't offer an unlimited data plan like AT&T in the States, being the monopolistic bastids they are.

The base plan of 400mb data/150 minutes calling starts at $60/month, so for those of you who have an iPhone and use it moderately/normally (whatever constitutes "normal use"), do you know how much data you push each month?

I don't really use my cel phone that much for calling, unless I'm traveling, which gets expensive anyway cuz the long distance/roaming charges suck, so I'm not too concerned with the calling part of the plan.

Oh and real nice of Rogers to make Call Display part of a "value pack" so they can get more $$ from folks. Sigh. Maybe they offer that feature ala carte, if so I'll get the text msgs & call display as extras only.

May be a sliver of hope...

to get a less expensive plan.
In reading the following article in the Montreal gazette, the last part can be attractive:

The iPhone 3G is what Rogers will make available. It is promoted as being twice as fast as the first iPhone launched by Apple Inc. last year.
Rogers said dataless plans for the iPhone, with just voice and basic text, will start at $15 a month.
Bruce Cran, president of the Consumers Association of Canada, urged caution for those considering being among the first legitimate iPhone users in Canada. He said the amount of data allowance for the $60 plan is "very, very little," and customers could find themselves paying a lot more than they bargained for.
"Spam alone would eat up that amount (of data)," he said.
Cran also said the three-year contract requirement will be an expensive proposition for those who decide shortly after acquiring an iPhone that it's not for them.

Greedy....

I guess the only way to bring "Robbers" down a peg is for nobody to buy their plan, or the iPhone...and if Apple sold very few iPhones in Canada they would pull out until there was a company that was more reasonable and affordable. Problem is that they are the only game in town. Maybe once the complaints start pouring in the government will step in...it could happen.

iPhone on WiFi - costs?

If I am using an iPhone in my home that has wireless, will it use that instead of the 3G? And if so, will it charge data and calls as normal or are they 'free' in this case?

It will use the Wi-Fi and be

It will use the Wi-Fi and be free.

darn - means I have to buy one :)

The Wi-Fi makes up for a lot of it. At home and work then there are no charges against my minutes. So the only charge is when I am not near a WiFi that I can access. When you think about it, if that is the case for many users the unlimited data plans are more smoke and mirrors than something to worry about.

Still, Rogers is a royal pain up here in Canada. That is the one thing that I missed about the States - competition.

Now what to do with my other two iPods (a Touch and Nano)?

Thanks for the info...
