Anniversary Shoutout
There are times when I wonder if people think that the birthday and anniversary shoutouts I do during the show are just fluffy and filler for the show - you know, I wonder if I should continue doing it, are people sick of it or do they think it's just plain silly.
And then I get an email like the following from Jim Kendall, who wrote to me yesterday (posted with his permission):
Sly,
Just a note of thanks for your Anniversary shoutout on the Valentines Day show. I asked to have our anniversary included 2 or 3 years ago so I was pleasantly surprised to hear it with no repeat of my request. This was the thirty-fifth anniversary of our marriage.
Juli would have loved to hear you wish us the best during the show. I lost her to cancer in August 2006, but my marriage and love are as real and as important to me today as they were 35 years ago. As with so much of my life these days, there is sadness that I cannot share it with Juli. But there is also great joy and appreciation for the years we shared together. I was listening to the Audible podcast, sitting in the car at one of our favorite locales (at the beach) when my somewhat distracted ear heard our names. I rewound and listened again and again.
Thanks again.
Jim Kendall
Jim, THANK YOU for one of the best emails (if not *the* best email) I have ever received since doing this show (although I don't thank you for making my mascara run for two days). :-) As I told you in my response, you really made my day. We should all be so lucky to have what you had with your wife. I am so sorry for your loss.
A little reaffirmation after all these years is nice....very nice indeed.

Wow. I'm reading this at
Wow. I'm reading this at work and I'm moved to tears. I think we all wish for a love so true. Thank you for sharing, Sly and Jim.
Shoutouts Rule!
Sly - I'm happy that you received the letter from Jim, and I'm happy that he took the time to write you! I'm re-joining the YML community today after a little hiatus - see my post on the "Hi, I'm..." forum (http://www.yourmaclifeshow.com/content/mcgruff-crime-dogat-your-service). I must say that I always enjoyed your weekly shoutouts - and am looking forward to them again! One time I had you give an anniversary shoutout to my wife & I - and I made sure my wife was sitting by my computer when you announced it since I knew what part of the show it would be on - she got such a kick out of it!
It is one of the reasons why I'm happy to be re-joining YML - because of the sense of community that I feel a part of when I'm listening to the show - and your shoutouts are a big part of that sense of community! So keep up the good work - it is appreciated! Matt
Anniversary Shoutout
Kerrin,
Sorry to make you cry. Juli so loved life and loved to laugh. If you're interested in some of what she accomplished in her quiet, somewhat private way, just put "Juli Kendall" into Google and see what pops up. Yep? It's all about her, her pre-blogging "journals" on the internet, and the two books she wrote during her last 4 years of life.
